Codex 0.164.0 lets you save reusable prompts as presets and set the model and permissions in a single command. It also masks credentials in some remote command sessions.
Presets replace retyping the same instructions
You can save prompts and slash commands in ten numbered /presets slots and pick one from a keyboard menu. If you open sessions with the same review checklist each time, a preset saves pasting it.
The /model and /permissions commands now accept inline arguments. One command can set the model, reasoning effort, speed, and permission profile, where before you stepped through menus.
Credential masking covers only supported remote sessions
Codex now masks credentials during supported remote Bash commands and Zsh snapshot sessions, including credentials from custom providers. Masking keeps secret values from appearing in what Codex shows, which makes them less likely to end up in the conversation. OpenAI does not define which remote setups count as supported, so a remote session may not be covered.
Smaller changes
- Fullscreen transcripts can preview images on terminals that support Kitty or Sixel graphics.
- Enterprise MCP connections (tools your agent connects to) can sign in with eligible Codex account grants.
- The Amazon Bedrock setup wizard is on by default.
- A failed compaction, where Codex summarizes a long conversation, no longer leaves a partial summary in your history.
- Resumed sessions restore their saved settings instead of global defaults.
- Queued prompts now wait for pending permission choices before continuing.
- Sandbox checks are hardened for case-variant macOS metadata paths and for replaceable symlinks used to locate executables.
