On November 16, 2026, GitHub will remove three models from every Copilot experience: Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5, and GPT-5.6 Terra. That covers Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions.
GitHub suggests these replacements:
- Claude Opus 4.8 and Claude Opus 5: Claude Opus 5.5
- GPT-5.6 Terra: GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna
Individual subscribers on annual plans keep Claude Opus 4.8, so they still have an Opus option. Everyone else loses it.

If a saved workflow, integration, or personal habit points at one of these models, switch it to a replacement before November 16.
On Copilot Business and Enterprise, the suggested replacements turn on automatically. The exception is an organization where an administrator has turned off the global default or disabled the specific model. There, an admin has to enable the replacement in Copilot settings before people see it in the model selector.
Nothing needs to be removed by hand after the date. GitHub does that itself.
