Claude Code’s background subagents now use less of your usage limit. A subagent is a helper the main agent hands a smaller job to, and a background one keeps working while you do something else. Anthropic’s Claude Code account announced the change on X on November 4.
Status updates no longer re-read the whole conversation
A running background subagent refreshes its status line every 30 seconds. Until now, each refresh re-read the subagent’s whole conversation, so a long-running helper paid for that history again and again.
Now Haiku 5.5, Anthropic’s small, low-cost model, writes the status line from short notes instead. Anthropic says each update costs about 99% less. The subagent keeps doing its real work on whatever model it was already using.
About 5% less usage, only for sessions with background subagents
Anthropic says sessions with background subagents used about 5% less of the usage limit, which it describes as about 6% more prompts for the same limit. A session without background subagents sees no change. If you already run several helpers in parallel, the gain is a few percent of your limit, not extra capacity on the scale of the 99% per-update figure.
Anthropic says the change is live for most Pro, Max and Ultra users and for everyone on Team and Enterprise. It needs Claude Code v2.1.316 or later, so update first if you run an older version. On Pro, Max and Ultra you may not see the lower usage right away.
